DREAM SEQUENCE - INT. THEATRE STAGE - DAY
A bare stage that could be in any high school or community center.
Two ACTORS (FARMER/MERIWETHER, MAN/MERTON) stand downstage in front of the curtain. Both men wear TOGAS, obvious fake BEARDS to make them look older, and LAUREL LEAVES in their hair to complete their classical Greek look.
NARRATOR (V.O.)
Once upon a time, a man bought a donkey from a farmer for 100 drachma. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day. But, the next morning, the farmer drove up and said-
FARMER/MERIWETHER
Sorry, but I've got some bad news regarding our transaction. The donkey you bought died in transit.
MAN/MERTON
Oh, that is most unfortunate. Well then, just give me my money back.
FARMER/MERIWETHER
I can't. Alas, I have already spent it.
MAN/MERTON
OK then, just unload the donkey.
FARMER/MERIWETHER
But why? What are you going to do with him?
MAN/MERTON
I am going to raffle him off.
FARMER/MERIWETHER
You can't raffle off a dead donkey!
MAN/MERTON
Sure I can. Watch me. I just won't tell anyone he's dead. That is, unless you'd like to reimburse me for what I paid for him.
FARMER/MERIWETHER
I wish I could, but I can't. But I wish you all the best in your endeavor, sir. Good day to you.
BLACKOUT.
NARRATOR (V.O.)
A month later the farmer met the man near the foot of the acropolis.
FADE IN on the same stage as before. Behind them is a large painted CANVAS BACKDROP depicting the the ACROPOLIS in Athens.
FARMER/MERIWETHER
Hello, how are you? I'm glad we have met by chance here today, because a question has been burning in my mind that I wished to ask you. What ever happened with the dead donkey?
MAN/MERTON
Indeed, that could have proven to be an unfortunate transaction for me. But it all worked out in the end.
FARMER/MERIWETHER
But how? Do tell.
MAN/MERTON
I raffled the donkey off like I said I would. I sold 500 tickets at 2 drachma apiece. So, deducting the 100 I paid you, I made a profit of 898.
FARMER/MERIWETHER
Didn't anyone complain?
MAN/MERTON
Just the guy who won. So I gave him his 2 drachma back.
They both laugh heartily.
FARMER/MERIWETHER
You are very shrewd my friend. I congratulate you and respect your ingenuity. But you know, you could have made even more.
MAN/MERTON
But how?
FARMER/MERIWETHER
Instead of a refund, you should have given the winner a free ticket for your next raffle.
They laugh even louder.
Then they are violently attacked by a GROUP OF CAPUCHIN MONKEYS who begin to eat the flesh off their faces. The men scream with horror.
END DREAM SEQUENCE.

"The result was a downward spiral that fed upon itself, driving market positions to unanticipated extremes, well beyond the levels incorporated in risk management and stress loss discipline."
Long Term Capital Management, Confidential Memo, January 1999.
And today, August 17, marks the 12th anniversary of the 1998 Russian default/debt moratorium. And we all know what that led to.
